History and Higlights
The Hong Kong Indian Women’s Club was established on the 20th December 1957, when a group of Indian women, far away from India residing in the colony, gathered together to form a club to know one another better, to learn each others' customs and to do social and charitable work for the betterment of humanity.
Our members meet regularly once a month and a variety of interesting and intellectual programs are arranged. Our members have helped with the Red Cross and volunteered with Mother's Choice, Heep Hong Society for the Handicapped Children and many other organisations. The club has always endeavored to integrate with all charitable and social causes of Hongkong and participate actively at all community functions.
The HKIWC has been offering appreciable assistance for the education of the local children and scholarships have been awarded at various levels of education both in HK and overseas.
February 1976, saw us donating a science laboratory to the Sir Ellis Kadoorie Schoo. A few years later, approximately HK$230,000 was donated towards the building of the School Hall. This enabled the Ellis Kadoorie to become a fully fledged school and our club was commended by the HK government who then committed itself to the running of the school.
On our 25th anniversary, over HK$500000.00 was collected and the Hongkong Indian Women’s Silver Jubilee Trust Fund was formed. The yearly interest from this is utilized in our education programmes and donated to other charitable institutions.
We moved on to our 30th year, where we raised funds for the Community Chest of Hong Kong, and a presentation of HK$300000.00 was made. In 1991, the Hongkong India Cancer Relief Trust fund benefited from a gala movie premier and the amount of HK$450000.00 was donated.
On our 35th anniversary, funds amounting up to HK$570000.00 were raised towards the Charities and Education Fund of the Club to meet growing needs of our various charities.
The year 1994 saw us actively supporting the newly founded Children’s Thalessemia Foundation by hosting a gala fashion event. With the generous support of our donors, a presentation of HK$750000.00 was made at their launch on July 13th, 1994 at The Queen Mary Hospital in Pokfulam.
On our 40th anniversary, the club raised HK$1.2 million for the Society for the Promotion of the Hospice Care in Hongkong and the Village Outreach Programme in Mt. Abu, India.
A gala fashion show fundraiser suitably named "Exotica", was hosted in October 2002 at the Conrad Hotel. Proceeds raised mainly supported the HK Alzheimer’s and Brain Disease Association and other charitable organizations.
The Club has also donated funds towards victims of natural disasters such as the Gujarat earthquake and the disastrous tsunami that struck in December 2005.
As this is our 50th year, a significant milestone in the history of our Club, it is our intention to outpace our previous efforts at raising funds. It is our aim to bridge across all sections of society in Hong Kong and raise a significant contribution to benefit the needy and underpriviledged.
The beneficiaries of this years' fundraising is specifically allocated to the Children’s Cancer Foundation and ongoing charities.
Not forgetting that children are our future, we are planning a "Masti Mela", a Family Fun Carnival which is scheduled to take place on 11th November, 2007. This will be an entertaining and colourful fun fair with games and delicious food for the entire family. Once again, proceeds from this event will serve to benefit such charities as Karuna Asia and Watchdog. As part of our 50th Anniversary celebrations, we will also pay a special tribute to all past Presidents and members of the HKIWC who have pioneered the various charitable causes in Hong Kong. A lunch has been confirmed at the Holiday Inn Golden Mile Hotel for the month of January 2008. Having successfully crossed the Golden Era, the club pledges its commitment to constantly evaluate and improve its activities, to consolidate and grow with the community of Hong Kong, but most of all to help this world to be a better place to live, in peace and harmony.
